It’s amazing to me how lyrics have this innate ability to explain and express emotions that we, sometimes, cannot express ourselves. There’s a song for everything. And most of the time, it’ll hit you, randomly, while you’re driving down the road listening to the radio and it comes on and all you can think is, Ah ha! That explains how I’m feeling!
As a writer, I tend to pay attention to lyrics above all other aspects of songs (depending on the genre of music, of course). Listen to the lyrics in the following clips. If they don’t move you one way or another, you’re crazy 🙂
People have “theme songs.” For me, (and don’t get ahead of yourself with the title until you listen to the song…) it’s “A Beautiful Mess,” by Jason Mraz.
Everyone has a song that gets them through a breakup. Whether it’s an angry, “I hate you” song, or an, “I miss you ode,” many people turn to lyrics to help explain when they’re feeling after a breakup. For me, it’s “Almost Lover,” by A Fine Frenzy.
There are also songs that just make you down right happy. When Journey comes on at a party or at a bar, everyone sings along, dances and has a smile from ear to ear.
There are songs with a very intentional message like, “Waiting on the World to Change,” by John Mayer. This song has very powerful lyrics that outline issues the public is facing at this moment – through creative lyrics.
This song, by Snow Patrol, has to be the most romantic song I have ever heard. I dare you to prove me wrong.
Lyrics have a way of making sense of what normally doesn’t make sense. They make you think about things you wouldn’t normally think about. Lyrics can tell the story of your life.
My theme song is this one (obviously): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwN1JTYi5w4
Great post!
And I do love Journey! and I love when amateurs sing it. but I hate baseball cards: http://freevlog.hu/video/18493.html
I know exactly how you feel. A perfect blog idea. However for me, the music without lyrics influences me just as much as the music with it. Something like “The Enterprise” from Star Trek (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSvV2QTAcHY) or “Arrival to Earth” from Transformers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H0JDomv8ac). I love listening to this kind of music because it is so complex, so much depth. Just listening to it takes me to a new level. But if I really do have a theme song, it is “Defying Gravity.” Song just really resounds with me but the other two mentioned above would qualify too.
