Context Optional partnered with WOMMA to host our first Wine Wednesday event yesterday. We’re big supporters of WOMMA and their mission to further the practice of word of mouth marketing. The non-profit represents marketers, researchers, service providers and agencies and is helping to pave the way for our industry. We were excited to join forces with them last night.

Coincidentally, the day we announced our event, Mashable officially coined June 30, 2010 Social Media Day. According to Mashable, on this day, we “acknowledge and celebrate the revolution of media becoming social” and honor “the technological and societal advancements that have allowed us to have a dialogue, to connect and to engage.”

Seems perfect, right? We thought so.

We cleaned up our office, gave away a lot of ducks (our official office mascot), filled bellies with cheese and other munchies (and don’t forget the wine), and enjoyed the company of an office full of people, including representatives from brands to platforms. We certainly celebrated the first Social Media Day in style.

With cases of wine provided by our client, Ravenswood, and special guest, Steen Andersson from 5thFinger, a mobile marketing company, we were more than prepared to discuss our Hot Topic of the night: Social + Mobile.

Steen and Context Optional CEO, Kevin Barenblat, engaged the audience with their ideas behind the inevitable and irresistible crossover between social and mobile.

The two agreed the focus is on building deeper relationships with consumers through using social and mobile. Tying together social and mobile allows brands to connect with consumers in more personal and targeted ways.

For example, the ability to combine social with mobile closes a significant gap in the space – fragmentation. Especially with retail brands, different locations and promotions create a challenge in reaching the right target. Mobile solves this issue with check-ins, coupons, and localized features sent directly to personal mobile devices. From there, users are able to engage and share with their friends.

The power of this overlap is undeniable.

With any up-and-coming social forecast, there’s much more to learn and explore. We think this is definitely one of the hottest topics in social and we’ll be sharing many more thoughts here on our blog.

If you attended our event, let us know what you gained and what you’d like to see in the future!
