Making Bread
After watching Michael Pollan’s Cooked on Netflix, I was inspired to make my own loaf of sourdough bread. Here’s how it went down.
Lazy Bear
This year, I wanted to do something extra special for my birthday dinner. I’d heard about Lazy Bear from a few friends and colleagues who just raved about it. It started as a “dinner party” hosted at chef David Barzelay’s home (see the anagram?) and is now more like an event than a dinner out. Fun fact: Barzelay was a lawyer before becoming a chef.
Shrimp Scampi: Zoodle Edition
I’ve been working very hard as of late to eat healthier. I’d say it has to do with the changing season, but San Francisco is basically perpetually fall. I find I just feel better when I’m paying attention to what I’m eating and drinking and when I limit certain things (gluten, sugar, dairy) I tend to have more energy, feel lighter and cleaner, and just better about myself in general.
Southern Comfort Food & My San Francisco Family
It was the middle of June 2009 and my mom and I had walked miles and miles around San Francisco looking for an apartment. We didn’t have much time to find one, sign a lease and get a set of keys. We walked everywhere, sometimes in heels, and we just hadn’t found the right apartment for me to start my new journey in San Francisco.
Ya Ya’s Beef Stroganoff
Every year since I was very little, my mom, brother and I visit my Ya Ya and Pop Pop in Arizona over the holidays. This year was no different. I flew in Christmas Eve and spent five days relaxing, reading, playing Gin, and spending time with family in sunny Arizona.
Eggnog Challah French Toast
I had a craving the other morning. French toast. I rarely treat myself to this kind of decadent breakfast (I mean, it really has no healthy redeeming qualities – bread, eggs, sugar, the end). Hey, ’tis the season, right?
On the sixth night of Hanukkah…
Hanukkah. The festival of lights. It’s one of my favorite holidays (and no, not just because as a kid I got eight presents). It’s one of my favorite holidays because the story really is miraculous.
What I’m wishing for this holiday season
I’m terrible at putting together lists of what I want. I guess my mentality has always been that if I want something, I’ll buy it for myself, or save for it until I can buy it for myself. I don’t like asking for things, which can be incredibly frustrating for the ones around me (ahem, The Boyfriend) who never know what to get me.
On my Thanksgiving table
Thanksgiving is one of my all-time favorite holidays. It’s the introduction to fall, the holiday season, and it’s full of delicious food. What more could you ask for?
It’s all about the brine…
It’s not too late to brine your turkey for Thanksgiving tomorrow!
Breakfast at Outerlands
Last weekend, I had all of my best college girlfriends in town for the weekend. It was so much fun having them in San Francisco and showing them some of my favorite spots in the city. Obviously, we needed to eat.
A little something different around here…
When I started The Offbeat Report in 2008, I had no clue what it would turn into. Honestly, I started this blog so I had a place to write. I was Editor-in Chief of my college newspaper and missed writing. I remember, sitting around, trying to come up with a name for...
